The mayor of Uman has threatened to block the entrance to the Hasidim for a period of Rosh Hashanah
Kiev. August 17. INTERFAX-Uman Mayor Alexander Tsebriy threatened to block entry for Hasidim during the Jewish New year in connection with the coronavirus and said that he will go to Kiev to meet with the President of Ukraine to discuss this issue.
"Dear residents of Uman, I am ready to take the most drastic measures, but within the framework of the current legislation. You remember how it was when the entrances to the territory of the city of Uman were blocked by roadblocks. This decision can be made by the TEB and the emergency service of the city of Uman. I want to hear your attitude to this, how you will feel when we take such precautionary measures during Rosh Hashanah, " he said in a video message on his Facebook page on Monday.
Tsebriy noted that he will go to Kiev to discuss this situation with Vladimir Zelensky.
"I am convinced that Mr. President does not know about this situation, and I think that he is not informed enough by his so-called servants of the people. Therefore, I am now going to the city of Kiev, under the office of the President, and I will wait there until they really communicate with me and the President personally learns from me what the situation is in the city of Uman, does not know your, umanchane, mood," the mayor said.
He added that he was invited to the meeting of the state Commission of TEB and emergency situations, and also recalled that at the meeting on August 11, the Commission decided on the possibility of the presence of five to ten thousand pilgrims on the territory of the city during the celebration of Rosh Hashanah.
"I thought that we were heard, understood and will be listened to. Therefore, I thought that the only correct decision would be made today - to restrict the visit of Hasidic pilgrims to the city and to abandon the traditional Rosh Hashanah. But I was wrong. At this meeting, it was announced by the head that the decision has already been made and it is not subject to correction," Cebri explained.
As reported, the participants of the interdepartmental meeting in the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Ukraine came to a joint opinion that the arrival of tens of thousands of Hasidic pilgrims to Uman in the Cherkasy region to celebrate Rosh Hashanah in the traditional format in 2020 is impossible due to the epidemiological situation in Israel, the ban on holding mass events in Ukraine, the need to create a large number of places for observation and the complexity of law enforcement monitoring the observance of self-isolation by pilgrims.
Later, the Ministry of health of Israel called on Kiev not to allow this year's Hasidic pilgrimage to Uman on the Rosh Hashanah holiday.
Traditionally, during the celebration of the Jewish New year, about 30 thousand pilgrims come to Uman.
