Erdogan ordered to turn Istanbul's Hora monastery into a mosque
Istanbul. August 21. INTERFAX-Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan ordered to turn Istanbul's Chora monastery, which had the status of a Museum, into a mosque, European media reported.
Thus, this decision was made a month after the Turkish authorities turned the Hagia Sophia, recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site, into a mosque.
The Church of Christ the Saviour in the Fields, also known as the monastery of Chora, is the most intact Byzantine Church in Istanbul. Since 1948, it has been open to tourists and is called the Karie Museum.
Earlier this summer, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that his country protects the cultural heritage of Christianity, citing the example of the restoration of the Orthodox monastery of Panagia Sumela in the province of Trabzon.
