Azerbaijan's foreign Ministry rejects accusations of shooting at a Cathedral in Karabakh
Baku. October 9. INTERFAX - the Azerbaijani side rejects the accusations of the Armenian foreign Ministry in the shelling of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour by the Azerbaijani armed forces in the city of Shusha in Nagorno-Karabakh, the Azerbaijani foreign Ministry said in a statement.
"The statement of the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Armenia about the targeting of religious and historical monuments in the occupied Azerbaijani city of Shusha by the Azerbaijani armed forces is another false accusation and provocation," the Azerbaijani foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The document notes that the statement of the Armenian side was made "in order to distract the world community from the facts of the Armenian shelling of Azerbaijani settlements with a dense population, civil infrastructure and cultural monuments."
"By launching missile attacks on the second largest city of Azerbaijan, Ganja, the center of the country's historical and cultural heritage, Armenia has once again openly demonstrated the policy of vandalism that has been carried out for many years," the Azerbaijani foreign Ministry said.
"Unlike Armenia, which carries out cultural genocide in the occupied territories, destroys and desecrates mosques, Azerbaijan attaches great importance to preserving the traditions of tolerance, a clear evidence of which is the completely renovated and state-protected Church of St. Gregory in the center of Baku," the Azerbaijani foreign Ministry said in a statement.
"The military leadership of the Azerbaijani armed forces has already stated that the goals of the Azerbaijani army are the military infrastructure, firing points and military units of the enemy. The Azerbaijani armed forces are conducting counter - offensive activities on their sovereign territories within the framework of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Convention," the document says.
"Undoubtedly, as soon as Nagorno - Karabakh and the surrounding areas of Azerbaijan are liberated from occupation, all historical, cultural and religious monuments of Azerbaijan destroyed as a result of the Armenian aggression will be restored here," the foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Earlier, the Armenian side said that the Azerbaijani military twice launched rocket attacks on the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Shusha on Thursday. It was reported that three Russian citizens, including journalists Yuri Kotenok and Levon Arzanov, were injured. One of them is in serious condition. Journalists arrived at the Cathedral after the first attack to cover the consequences of the bombing.
The Armenian foreign Ministry has previously stated that it considers the deliberate shelling of journalists by Azerbaijan in the city of Shusha in Karabakh.
